For this toy packaging project, I redesigned the package for a mahjong set with a focus on sustainability. The main challenge was to replace the existing packaging with a more sustainable material. I chose bamboo because it connects to the product culturally and also has sustainable qualities. This was my first time making a box with wood, and it was very challenging. Bamboo is soft in some ways, but it also has strength, so I had to test different structures and construction methods. Through this project, I learned how much material properties can affect the design process. I also learned that sustainability is not only about choosing a material, but also about understanding how that material works.
